Short History Of The Internet

Our everyday life is aided by computers. We have computers in our home, workplace, and even helping to control our cars. We now have access to a world of information at our fingertips through the Internet. With the Internet we can access current information, books, magazines, records and an endless amount of other information. And the advances in technology have allowed high speed Internet access not only by computers and Cheap Laptops, but also through mobile handheld devices and even video games.

Here is a brief look at some of the major events in the development of the Internet:

1958 – In reply to the launch of Sputnik, the US Department of Defense began the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), later known as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), to maintain US supremacy in military technology.

1962 – John Licklider of the Advanced Research Project Agency’s Information Processing Techniques Office suggests a “Galactic Network” to link computers all around the globe.

1969 – Advanced Research Projects Agency network (ARPANET), under the direction of the United States Department of Defense, starts testing ways to allow a computer network to survive a nuclear military attack.

1972 – A test of the first email sent using the @ addressing system occurs.

1973/74 – ARAPNET begins using the TCP/IP protocol for network communications.

Late 1970s – George Strawn of Iowa State University and his colleagues at other universities around the world increasingly use email as a way to communicate and look for ways to increase the number of computer networks available to help research.

1981 – United States National Science Foundation Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate begin CSNET, its own network that connects to ARPANET in an early version of the Internet. CSNET was discontinued in 1991.

1985 – Quantum Computer Services, later known as America Online, begins Q-Link as a service to unite Commodore computers and its users. America Online would go on to be a dominant early player in providing online services.

1986 – US National Science Foundation launches NSFNET, a major core of the Internet that links over one hundred thousand computers. Commercial providers start to offer access help and other backbone connections to interested parties.

1991 – World Wide Web, formed by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Caillau, introduced as a hypertext platform for accessing computer networks.

1993 – Mosaic, later known as Netscape, the first easy-to-use graphical web browser is introduced, letting millions of users to access the Internet for the first time.

1995 – Yahoo! is incorporated and the company produces one of the very first search engines for use on the World Wide Web.

1996 – US Telecommunications Act of 1996 allows cable companies, home phone service companies, Internet service providers, and other companies to compete in each other’s markets. This spurs the growth of technologies needed to provide high speed Internet service to users.

1998 – is launched and eventually becomes the most widely used search engine on the World Wide Web.

1998 – Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) assumes responsibility for overseeing the domain name system.

Early 2000s – Cable television companies increasingly offer high-speed Internet access via cable modems. DSL and other high-speed access methods begin to grow in popularity and widespread availability.

Today – Nearly two billion people worldwide use the Internet on a regular basis.

With the growth of 3G wireless communication networks and the promise of ultra-fast 4G wireless networks coming into existance sometime between 2010 and 2012, the wireless Internet will soon become the dominant form of Internet Access used in the world. This move to a wireless Internet is made further evident by the growing use of smaller mobile computing devices, such as Cheap Laptops, compact netbooks, and smartphones.
