Personal Digital Assistants

If you like to stay connected to the office while on the go but don't like to carry around bulky Used Laptops, then a handheld PDA (personal digital assistant) is probably your best choice. With a refurbished PDA, you can have easy access to your address book, email, and the Internet without having to pay a lot of money.

Refurbished PDA's are used items which have been restored to be as good as new. Although some of these PDA's will still have a small amount of minor cosmetic flaws on the outside, the performance of the device will be just as good as if you had bought it straight out of the factory. Typically, all of the PDA's hardware will have been re-certified by the manufacturer and is now covered by a warranty.

The Difference Between Used And Refurbished

The most important thing to be aware of when shopping for cheap PDA's online is that "refurbished" and "used" do not necessarily mean the same thing. Refurbished (or re-certified) means that the item was sent back to the company that manufactured it. The manufacturer will then replace parts, make upgrades, and install different software as necessary to make the refurbished PDA as good as new.

Refurbished PDA handhelds should be considered a step above the "used" palm pilots and pocket PCs you might see on Ebay. The truth is that most of those devices haven't gone through any process of restoration. They are merely pre-owned items that someone is selling "as is" and have not been refurbished in any way. They also will probably have no warranty while refurbished products usually come with a warranty of at least 90 days or more.

So make sure that any "used" PDA you want to buy has been fully refurbished and / or re-certified by the manufacturer. Otherwise, you might end up with a truly "used" device that doesn't function as well as it should.

Which Device - Palm or Pocket PC?

As you begin shopping for a refurbished PDA, the first major decision you will need to make is whether to go with a Palm PDA or a Pocket PC. The main difference between these two models is that Palm handhelds are better known for their simplicity while the Pocket PC is generally a more capable device with a Windows look and feel.

This is a decision which should be determined by your specific needs. If all you really want to do is to keep an up-to-date appointment calendar, contact lists, to-do lists, phone numbers, etc., then you might want to stay with the simplicity and ease-of-use that defines the Palm handhelds. However, if you need mobile access to PC-like applications or you are more comfortable with the traditional Windows style of navigation, then a Pocket PC might be more to your liking.
